- ABOUT PELVIC FLOOR PT
The Pelvic Floor - Anatomy and Functions
The pelvic floor consists of 3 layers of sling-like muscle that support the internal organs of the abdomen including:
+Bowels/rectum, bladder, and urethra
+The uterus and vagina in women
+Prostate in men
The pelvic floor plays an important role in:
+Sexual function
+Bowel and bladder function
+Providing stability to the pelvis, lumbar spine, sacroiliac joint, and hip
+Regulating pressure in the abdomen
What to Expect During a Pelvic Floor Evaluation
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists will spend time taking a thorough history in order to create an individualized approach to treatment. Depending on the patient’s comfort level and history, Physical Therapists may perform an internal examination to assess the strength, coordination, and sensitivity of the pelvic floor.
Interventions for PFD typically include behavioral strategies, internal examination, manual techniques, modalities, therapeutic exercise, education, stretching, deep breathing, postural and functional re-training.
Pelvic Floor Myth Busters
“I do a bunch of kegels, so I don’t need pelvic floor rehab.” – PFD can be classified as underactive, overactive, or uncoordinated. If your pelvic floor is overactive, you may require relaxation techniques and myofascial tissue work. If your pelvic floor is lacking coordination, you may need functional or postural retraining.
“It is normal to leak a little urine when laughing, coughing, jumping, or running.” – Leaking urine during any daily activity is abnormal and a common sign of PFD.
