Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started with Physical Therapy
No. In New York and Connecticut, you do not need a referral to see a physical therapist. You can schedule directly with Iron Health and begin your evaluation. If you plan to use insurance benefits, check your plan's requirements before your visit.
Your first visit is an initial evaluation, which typically lasts about 40 minutes. During this visit, your therapist will:
- Assess your movement and how your body handles key patterns
- Review your pain, symptoms, and history
- Talk through your training and activity goals
- Build a personalized plan designed around your body and objectives
From there, you'll work with your provider regularly and adjust the plan as you improve.
Iron Health is built for active adults and athletes. Physical therapy may be a good fit if you:
- Have joint, spine, or tendon pain that limits your activity
- Notice symptoms keep coming back whenever you push yourself
- Are recovering from an injury or surgery
- Want to return to lifting, sport, hiking, or daily life with more confidence
- Want rehab that builds long-term strength, not only short-term relief
You don't need a referral to begin, and a physical therapy evaluation is a reasonable first step if pain is limiting your activity, keeps returning, or followed an injury. However, if you have sudden severe pain, loss of function, or other concerning symptoms, contact your doctor or seek urgent care first.
It depends on your condition and goals. After your evaluation, your therapist will give you a realistic timeline. Many people notice improvements within a few weeks as they work through a personalized plan, and your plan is adjusted as you progress.
Physical Therapy Services & Treatment
Iron Health combines expert physical therapy with performance-focused training. Services include:
- Orthopedic Physical Therapy – one-on-one, movement-based rehab for joint pain, injury recovery, and long-term strength
- Post-Operative Rehab and Massage – structured recovery plans to rebuild strength and function after surgery
- Fitness – personal and small-group training with dedicated coaching
- Acupuncture – pain management and recovery support
- Massage – to support recovery and return to activity
One-on-one means every session is focused entirely on you: your movement, your progress, and your goals. Your therapist works with one client at a time, so you aren't rotating through a crowded clinic, and appointments are not rushed. Follow-up sessions are typically 40 minutes.
Iron Health is a boutique, performance-driven clinic that treats recovery and performance as one goal. What sets the approach apart:
- 1-on-1 personalized care with no rushed visits
- Strength-focused from day one, building resilience and not only reducing symptoms
- An integrated training space where therapists can load movements, test strength, and prepare you for real-world activity
- A team that understands both rehab and training
No. Pain relief matters, but the goal is to find the root of the problem, not just the symptoms. Care is movement-based and strength-focused so your body can handle the demands you place on it, and recovery doesn't stop when the pain fades. Your plan is built around your goals, whether that's lifting, training, or moving through daily life without limits.
Iron Health offers acupuncture for active adults to help manage pain, reduce tension, and support injury recovery, along with massage to support recovery. Ask your therapist whether adding either to your plan makes sense for you. Availability may vary by location.
Conditions We Treat
Iron Health treats joint, spine, and tendon injuries and pain in active adults. Common concerns include:
- Shoulder pain – difficulty reaching overhead, lifting, or sleeping on your side
- Low back pain – stiffness and discomfort with bending, lifting, or prolonged sitting
- Knee pain – pain with stairs, squats, or walking
- Hip pain – tightness or pinching with movement, walking, or getting up from a chair
- Neck pain – stiffness and tension affecting daily comfort and mobility
- Elbow and wrist pain – discomfort with gripping, lifting, or repetitive tasks
- Ankle and foot pain – issues affecting walking, balance, and movement confidence
Physical therapy can help many people with stiffness, discomfort, or tension in the back and neck, especially when it affects bending, lifting, sitting, or daily comfort. Your therapist will evaluate how you move and build a plan around what's driving your symptoms. Learn more about low back pain physical therapy.
Yes. Therapists commonly work with people who struggle with reaching overhead, lifting, gripping, or repetitive tasks. Your plan is built around your movement and activity goals, whether that's getting back to the gym or handling everyday tasks. See our page on shoulder pain physical therapy.
Yes. These problems can limit stairs, squats, walking, and balance. Physical therapy focuses on restoring strength and movement confidence so you can keep doing the activities you enjoy. Read more about knee pain physical therapy.
It may. Many people find that strengthening and movement-based care helps when symptoms keep coming back after rest, ice, and stretching. Your evaluation will help determine whether physical therapy is appropriate for your situation and what to expect.
Sports Injury & Performance Rehabilitation
Yes. Iron Health serves active adults and athletes, from active adults who want to move better in daily life to people training for competition.
Not usually. Your plan is built around what you can do safely while the underlying issue is addressed. The goal is to keep you moving, not shut everything down. Your therapist will adjust your training as you improve.
Rehab at Iron Health doesn't stop when pain fades. The clinic's integrated training space allows therapists to:
- Load movements to see how your body responds
- Test strength against the demands of your activity
- Progress gradually toward real-world performance
When it fits your goals, you can also transition into small-group or personal training.
It can. Your therapist will look at how your movement, strength, and training habits may be contributing to recurring aches, then build a plan that addresses the cause, not only the symptoms.
Building strength, mobility, and sound movement patterns can help your body handle training loads. Some clients check in periodically or when something flares up, and others move into performance training to keep building resilience.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Timing depends on your procedure and your surgeon's guidance, so follow their instructions on when to begin. Once you're cleared, Iron Health can start a structured post-operative rehab plan.
Post-op rehab uses a structured recovery plan to rebuild strength, mobility, and function after surgery. Your plan is personalized to your procedure, your goals, and your progress, and it focuses on getting you back to activity safely.
Recovery varies based on the type of surgery, your surgeon's protocol, and your overall health. After your evaluation, your therapist will give you a realistic timeline and adjust your plan as you progress.
Bring the following to your first visit:
- Relevant medical records and imaging results
- Any instructions or protocols from your surgeon
- Your insurance card, if you're using benefits
Wear comfortable athletic clothing.
Your therapist will progress you gradually from restoring basic function to building strength and capacity. Many clients then transition into small-group or personal training to keep building strength as they return to the activities they love.
Pain, Recovery & Exercise
Some muscle soreness can be a normal part of building strength. However, you should always tell your therapist about sharp, worsening, or unusual pain so they can adjust your plan.
You usually don't need to stop completely. Your therapist can show you how to modify your activity so you keep moving safely while the problem is addressed. Avoid pushing through sharp or worsening pain, and talk to your provider.
Many clients receive targeted exercises to support their progress between visits. Your therapist will tailor these to your condition and goals.
Both can play a role, but Iron Health takes a strength-focused approach. Building strength and resilience helps your body handle the demands you place on it, alongside mobility work where needed.
Rest, ice, and stretching can ease symptoms, but pain may return if the underlying cause isn't addressed. Physical therapy looks at your movement, strength, and activity habits to find what's contributing, then builds a plan to address it.
Fitness & Personal Training
Iron Health offers personalized small-group and personal training with dedicated coaching, designed to help you build strength and reach your fitness goals.
Absolutely. Many clients move from one-on-one rehab into small-group training as they progress. Your therapist will help you decide when the timing is right.
The right timing depends on your recovery, your goals, and how you're progressing. Your provider will guide you on when to begin or transition, so you build on your rehab instead of starting over.
No. Training is personalized, and clients of different ages and fitness levels train at Iron Health. Sessions are designed to challenge you while meeting you where you are.
Because the team understands both rehab and training. They can help you build strength while paying attention to your movement and injury history, which supports long-term consistency and resilience.
